Title: Teams, Fans Entertained at Sandia Resort Kickoff Lunch
The first thing keynote speaker John Robinson said when he stepped to the microphone was, “I cringe every time someone says legend because that means you are very, very old.” But that is exactly how New Mexico Bowl Executive Director Jeff Siembieda introduced the College Football Hall of Fame inductee at Friday’s Sandia Resort Kickoff Lunch.

College Football Hall of Famer John Robinson speaks about the special game
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The first thing keynote speaker John Robinson said when he stepped to the microphone was, “I cringe every time someone says legend because that means you are very, very old.” But that is exactly how New Mexico Bowl Executive Director Jeff Siembieda introduced the College Football Hall of Fame inductee at Friday’s Sandia Resort Kickoff Lunch.
Robinson, who coached and won a national championship with USC, spoke to the crowd about the special moments that lie ahead for the players in tomorrow’s game. He encouraged them to savor the moment, take it all in and never forget it because it will always be a special part of their lives down the road.
Robinson also recognized Fresno State safety Moses Harris, who also was honored at the National Football Foundation’s dinner in New York last week when he was inducted into the hall of fame. Harris was recognized as one of the top scholar athletes in collegiate football. He joked after Harris received a thunderous applause from the crowd that, “he could go get a real job” instead of coaching.
The event kicked off at 11:30 with both the Wyoming and Fresno State bands and cheerleaders performing. Then Siembieda spoke, welcoming everyone and recognizing special partners and all the people who make the event a success. Siembieda also introduced Chairman of the New Mexico Board Rudy Davalos and new Albuquerque mayor Richard Berry, who said a few words to those in attendance.
ESPN’s play-by-play commentator for the New Mexico Bowl broadcast interviewed both head coaches before Robinson spoke.
The game is 2:30 p.m. MT tomorrow, Saturday, Dec., 18 on ESPN.
