BERNALILLO, N.M. --- The 2009 New Mexico Bowl participants enjoyed a fun filled evening at the Santa Ana Casino Thursday night. Fresno State and Wyoming split a pair of events as part of the bowl week activities continued leading up to Saturday's kickoff at 2:30 p.m. MT in University Stadium.
Rudy's "Country Store" Bar-B-Q catered the event and kicked off the evening. Following dinner, both teams participated in a Survey Says mock game show hosted by entertainer Gus Davis. Survey Says, a knockoff of the classic game show Family Feud, matched four players from Fresno State against four players from Wyoming. Each team was asked questions posed to a survey of 100 college students and had to guess their top responses. After four rounds, the Bulldogs pulled out a 3-1 win.
Following the game show, both teams bowled a game at the casino’s Star Light Lanes. The top five bowlers from each team then paired off for the championship. The spirit of competition was never stronger throughout the evening as the two squads squared off in a Baker System bowl-off. Each qualifying bowler was allowed to throw for two frames.
After the first two frames the score was 18-15 Wyoming. Fresno State would draw no closer. The Cowboys exploded with back-to-back strikes in the third and fourth frames, amassing an insurmountable lead.
Fresno State did what it could to get back into the match, posting a strike in the fifth and a mark in the sixth. Still, Wyoming maintained a 132-to-119 lead after eight frames. The Cowboys clinched the bowl-off with a strike in the ninth and a spare in the 10th. Wyoming closed the evening with a 151-to-128 victory.
Friday's schedule includes a Sandia Resort and Golf Club Kickoff Luncheon that opens with a press conference at 10:30 a.m., followed by the meal. New Mexico Bowl Executive Director Jeff Siembieda, both head coaches and legendary former college and NFL coach John Robinson will speak. A Pep Rally will be held at University Stadium, starting at 4 p.m. with fireworks at 5:15 p.m.
